You may experience swelling in your mouth for various reasons. In some instances, it may even accompany a fever. Usually, a bacterial infection is the culprit. You need to see your dentist immediately to diagnose and treat the issue. A delay could cause the infection to spread and result in difficulty breathing and swallowing.
Possible Causes of Swelling in the Mouth
Toothache. A toothache can cause pain and swelling inside your mouth. It can be due to tooth decay, a cracked tooth, inflamed pulp, or broken fillings. The discomfort can range from mild to severe and affect your head and jaw as well.
Irritated wisdom teeth. Swelling can also occur as wisdom teeth attempt to erupt. Your dentist or oral surgeon may recommend an extraction to resolve the issue. There may still be swelling but this is temporary as you heal from oral surgery.
Gingivitis. Plaque buildup can irritate the gums and cause them to bleed and swell. The sooner you’re seen, your dentist can reduce the effects of gingivitis on your oral health.
